Decision on book direction

Posted: May 15, 2012 in Uncategorized

After presenting my ideas fro my two proposals to my tutour and peers, I have with their guidance decided to follow my first proposal idea of recording peoples reactions to evocative images and portraying them alongside one another in my book.

I have decided that in order to present the images in a way that will allow the, to not only be viewed easily but also for the reader/viewer to see the subject reactions together, they will be presented alongside one another in a landscape book (330mmx280mm)

Control Images

Below are the “control” images I will use, to show my subjects in order to evoke a reaction, I will not use all the resulting images but select from the best.

Research into photo books

Posted: April 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

Below are images of books I have viewed too give me further insight into various areas of photosbooks such as; design, layout, paper and size. From looking at these various books I am drawn to the larger ones as I feel they invite the viewer to look at the image more and I prefer the pages not to be overlaoded with content, be it images or text.

CATH – Proposal 2

Posted: April 15, 2012 in Uncategorized

Having produced some images already that focus on the homeles (below),

I would like to develop this idea further, but to give the project more depth I would like to propose that instead of simply photographing the homeless, it is my intention through this project to document the work of Chester Aid to the Homeless (CATH) in support of the fantastic work they do re-enabling the lives of the areas homeless people.  CATH is a charity that has been established for 40 years and is dedicated to supporting the areas homeless people, but as they state on their website “CATH isn’t simply about providing emergency accommodation and soup kitchens.”  Following a meeting with Abi Rosenbloom who is one of CATH’s educational development workers I learnt exactly what was meant by the aforementioned statement. CATH, as well as accommodating their service users, looks to improve the employability of the people who access their services by teaching valuable life skills as well as accredited and non-accredited courses. They also help with vocational training and work placements.

My approach to this proposed idea will be documentary style and the work contained within the book will be intended to highlight the work that CATH does outside of what I believe is a perceived notion that CATH is just about accommodating the homeless. The final product would be intended to disseminate information through the use of the contained imagery, examples of this work to possible service users, volunteers and fundraisers.

To whom it may concern,

My name is Lauren Cain and I am a 27 year old photographer from
Cheshire, currently studying a Ba(hons)Photography at the University Of
Salford. I am considering doing my next major project around the
homeless and was wondering if it would be possible for me to meet some
of the people who utilise your services in Chester.

A little bit about myself: I know Chester having lived there for 3 years
and as well as studying photography I work at the AED at the Countess Of
Chester as a health care assistant and have done for the last five
years.
For me photography started off as a hobby and then 3 years ago I started
my own business in portrait and wedding photography. Wanting to study
more about photography and pursue a documentary/photojournalism career I
undertook my degree last year.

I have already done some imagery around the homeless and for this
project I am looking to go more in depth. In order for me to pursue this
project I have to propose it to my tutors after Easter break and be
given a go ahead to do it, so for now all I need to know is if it would
be possible for me to meet your service users through your organisation.

I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration regarding
this project,

Kind Regards,

Lauren Cain
